Trail Finder is a map app for mountain biking, skiing, hiking, hunting, fishing and adventure riding. You can use all of it without an account. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and nothing is used to track you across other apps or websites.

Who looks after your data

Trail Finder is made by one person in British Columbia, who is also the person in charge of protecting personal information. Write to them at trailfinder.help@outlook.com for any question, request or complaint about your data.

Your location

Your location is used on your phone to show where you are, find trails near you, follow a ride or tour and give directions. It isn't sent to us unless you save something that holds it (a recorded ride, a spot, a trail report or a photo search) or you turn on live location (see below). You can turn location off for Trail Finder in your phone's settings; the map still works.

Without an account

With an account (optional)

Signing in keeps your settings, saved routes, rides and their photos, spots and folders on every device. We keep your email address, the name you add (if any, shown only to people you share your live location with) and those things. Only you can read them.

We email you only what your account needs: sign-in codes and links, and password resets. We don't send newsletters or ads. If we ever want to, we'll ask first, and every such email will have a way to stop them.

Things you choose to share

Other services the app talks to

Like any map app, the app asks map, terrain and weather services for the area on your screen: OpenStreetMap, OpenFreeMap, Esri, Open-Meteo, Avalanche Canada, government open data and similar. They see the area and your internet address, never your account. Strava files you import are read on your phone.

Where your data is kept

We use these companies to run the app, and they may keep your data outside Canada, mostly in the United States, where the law may let governments ask to see it:

They may use your data only to provide their service to us (except Google's free plan, see above).

How long we keep it

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, get a copy, or take back a yes you gave us. Most of it you can do yourself:

If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca), or in Quebec to the Commission d'accès à l'information (cai.gouv.qc.ca).

If something goes wrong

If your data is lost, stolen or seen by someone who shouldn't see it and that could seriously harm you, we'll tell you and the Privacy Commissioner as soon as we can.

Children

Trail Finder isn't made for children under 14 and we don't knowingly keep their data. Google's AI is for people 18 or older.

Changes

When this page changes, the date at the top changes too. If we start using your data in a new way, the app will tell you first.
